My new software is only about 3 weeks from being released in beta.

The STUDIO is a complete handicapping program that does an amazing amount of simple things and does them SIMPLY.

A few things about this software.
    • Not a database program.
    • On day 1 you have all you will ever need.
    • You can build simple models (but don't have to).
    • You can use Pace Handicapping (but don't have to).
    • You can select pacelines (but don't have to).
    • You can make notes on just about anything (but don't have to).
    • You can use the built-in Picks & Selections (but don't have to).
    • You can use the built-in Sheet-like numbers (but don't have to).
    • You can be free of the tote board (but don't have to).
    • You can use the built-in probabilities (but don't have to).
    • You can modify any component of the handicapping with your own opinions.
    • ...And a whole lot more.

It is Not a new HSH.
Neither is it priced like HSH.

Big discounts will be available to Active HorseStreet Forum Engagers.

So, this uses the same data as HSH?

    Yes.
That is the only possible business model that works for a software vendor.

Seems that is good news for current HSH users.

Well, I'd hope that we'd pick up 100+ new users outside of current HSH users.

There are a lot of horse players who purchase "reports" and spend close to the same amount as this software will provide.

Imagine a whole bunch of selectors and picker for every track.
Imagine unique reports for every track.
The list goes on and on.

Of course, the 3-4 day per month players can never justify spending money on software.

I simply cannot serve that market.

Why not do this! Let's say your kick back from HDW is $30 per month from each HSH downloader. You could then take that $30 per month and say if you want to use Brisnet data files the cost in $30 per month or $360 for the year. You could even say if you pay for the year up front, you get a 10% discount and that's $324. I'm sure there are players that would go for that!

If a user pays for one month, after that month the software is locked until you pay for another month or for the year!

As the president of BRIS said to me 30 years ago, "You don't expect to make a living at this, do you?"
(He offered me a 5% split on the download fees.)

In order to justify investing $150,000 in software development, the cost would need to be $75 per month, plus an annual fee for new upgrades.

It just isn't investable as a business.

That's why the BRIS software is typically so poor.

I inadvertently implied that the new product might not be a good deal for non-HSH users and that was certainly not my intent. I was just pointing out that maintaining the same data source would seem to be an especially good thing for people already on that plan as there is the familiarity aspect.

It's dreadfully simple and not very helpful.

Dave - can you tell us more about the roll-out?
    Any seminars planned?
    Reference material?

    Too early for that.
Can't record videos until things are finished.

But I'd expect that you'll start seeing screenshots by this time next week.

Dave: I don't use HSH. How much will it cost me for the new software and data fees?

    There will be several levels.
Still working on pricing, but levels are:
    1. No-Data (worksheets and organization) $79 + $12 a month
    2. Basic (HDW) $147 + $12 per month
    3. Premium (HDW) $477 + $12 per month
    4. Pro (HDW) Includes HSH $1,600 + $12 per month

The $12 per month is for subscription to this website which includes:
    Products from our store.
Special stuff like picks from our software, etc.
    A lot for very little.
If you have the software, it includes some very cool add-ins.

HDW Downloads are $142 per month from HDW.
    All tracks, with results.

So if you don't pay $12/month you can't use the software?
  • Dave Schwartz
    346

    Correct.

Did you expect it would be free?
  • Mark

Guess my question doesn’t get answered!
  • Slim

Free - no, but that business model works for HTR.

In every example you give for purchasing the software, you list a $12 monthly fee, then describe it as - "The $12 per month is for subscription to this website which includes:
    Products from our store.
Special stuff like picks from our software, etc."

My question is, is the $12 an additional REQUIRED monthly fee to use the software once purchased?

Example, I choose option 2, $147 for Basic software, $142 per month to HDW for any given month I choose to play, then it appears you want another $12 per month. Is that clear enough for you?
  • Dave Schwartz
    346
    That's crystal clear.

Trust me when I say that the $12 per month will be the best $12 you ever spent in terms of what you get.

We're trying to build something special here.
(And I am not talking just about the software.)

You'll either buy in or not.

For the record, my biz model is not the same as HTR.
He does it his way and I do it mine.
    I like mine.
    (He likes his.)
What matters to you is which one you like.

    Best to you, Slim.

Oh, and I apologize for my tone in my original reply.

I'm just amazed at how many people call me and say stuff like, "I only play 3 days a month. Can I get your software for free?"

But nevertheless, you did not deserve my tone, so I apologize.

Slim, this is sounding to me like it may be a really good deal. You may want to see how this unfolds before concluding that it does not have value.
  • Slim

    Not a problem.

I only occasionally look here, was just trying to be sure I understood the pricing structure.

    Good luck with the product.
  • Dave Schwartz

    Thank you.
We seem to be doing pretty well.
