Of all CAREER records, in all major sports, which one will be hardest to break?
    What do you think?
  • JRand

    Wilt Chamberlain's 100 point game.
Before Barry Bond I would have said Babe Ruth's homerun record but then they juiced the ball.

I'm going to include horse racing here. I don't believe that any trainer will be able to eclipse the total Wins when Steve Assmussen decides to retire. What he's accomplished is incredible. And he most likely has thousands of wins in front of him.
  • Jim Pommier

Kent Desormeaux's U.S. record for most races won in a single year with 598 wins in 1989.

I think everyone has misunderstood the question because I didn't highlight it properly.
The question is "Which CAREER record will be hardest to beat?"

Thus, @JRand's version fits the bill.
  • Conley

    Either
    Cy Young's 749 complete games
Wilt Chamberlain 100 points in a single game

    Cy Young's 749 complete gamesConley

Now that I know we're talking about career records, I think you're on the right track.
That record will likely stand forever because the game has change so much. Basically, they aren't even trying for perfect games any more.

I searched for career complete games and got this huge list. I looked down the list for an active pitcher but gave up looking at #100 who was Earl More with just 230 CG.

I think Conley's pick should stand the test of time.

But I think there are other records that are safe..
Like Wilt Chamberlain's career minutes per game 45.8.
The first active player on the list is #15 Lebron James with 38.2.

Tried some other NBA searches but couldn't find anything unbeatable.

Just realized that I forgot to post my answer.

Wilt Chamberlain's record for MOST GAMES PLAYED WITHOUT FOULING OUT.
Also, MOST MINUTES PLAYED WITHOUT FOULING OUT.

But I think @Conley's Cy Young CGs will also never be beaten.

    @Dustin Korth
While Ripken's record is amazing, we once said the same about Gehrig's, so I can only assume that one could be broken. But it sure is difficult to imagine.

It wasn't the ball that was juiced.

It will be tough to top Pete Maravich's college scoring total. And, he did it without a shot clock, a 3 point line or being able to play as a freshman.

I thought he did play as a freshman.
He is actually my favorite player of all time. Nobody was more interesting to watch.

He played, but not on varsity. Freshmen were not allowed to play varsity at the time.

He's my favorite. One of the great thrills of my life was to make a round trip about 20 miles each way in a car with Pete.

    Cool.
    When was this?

Still love watching the YouTube videos with his fancy ball handling.

Maybe 1970 or so. Pete came to my high school to promote basketball and demonstrate his drills. Jo Jo Dean was with him. My Dad was a deputy assigned to escort celebrities. We picked up Pete at the airport and drove him to my school and back. In the front seat was my Dad, me and Pete. In the back seat was Jo Jo Dean and two other people who I don't recall.

The only time I ever saw Pete in a game in person was when he was with the Hawks and they were playing the Rockets. Somewhat famously, Pete was forced out of bounds and the ref did not call it near halftime. Cotton Fitzsimmons benched Pete for the second half. So, my one game became a half game.

Pete certainly showed skills that we seldom see today. I’m not much of a basketball fan but I enjoyed watching him.

“Not much of a basketball fan” sounds strange coming from a native Kentuckian and University of Kentucky graduate doesn’t it?

I'd say that is possible, but since Tony Gwynn didn't do it, it's gonna be hard.

Yeah, the two best pure hitters I ever saw were Tony Gwynn and Pete Rose, but I didn't see many American Leaguers. I mostly saw the Houston Colt .45's/Astros.

    But it IS possible.
I still think Conley's suggestion was the best
(And I like mine as well.)

It's the CAREER records that are most difficult - and especially those that are not dependent upon being bigger/stronger/better. The ones that are based upon CUSTOMS and the customs have changed.

Yes, the Cy Yound complete games is untouchable, as well as his wins. Off the top of my head, I think that number is over 900.
