HA! Your post, Dave, reminded me of my time in the very expensive speed reading class from the 70s! Still remember the Holiday Inn (in Okla City) and a bearded instructor who smoked Virginia Slims (or something like that!) and presenting a classic 70s Disco wardrobe. Notwithstanding that (or because of it) It was a semi-impressive course that demonstrated one could 2x, 3x, 4x, reading speed with good comprehension...The main deal was to PAY ATTENTION and practice scanning a page of words. Basically, you missed the beauty of the writing (if there was any) but finished the book quickly!
